Nico Vinel, associate head coach, is second from left. Trainer Josh Nutsch sits on top row far right. The players, from left to right on the second row, are Alexandria von Tersch Poher and Regina Pitts of the USA, Alicia Melosch of Germany, and Tamara Arnold of Switzerland. The players on the bottom row, from left, are Cecile Morin of France, and Abbie Mulbarger and Nnena Nadozie of the USA, and Julia Jordan of Mexico. Nadozie and Jordan (N and J) zoomed without using cameras.

Spread quietly across a 16-inch monitor, eight members of the 2019-2020 Aztec women’s team sat in a kind of photoelectronic darkness.

Some cameras shed little light, Some participants slumped back in their seats.

It was just past mid-August and Samantha Oshiro had explained a series of academic deadlines. But the tennis schedule was still a work in progress.

Earlier, Coach Peter Mattera told Aztec Tennis Reporter that “I don’t know,” was the most frequent sentence he had been hearing all month.

Now, as we listened, Mattera was encouraging his players, listening from Mexico, Switzerland, France, and Germany, and the United States, to stay fit.

The team was “…hopefully getting ready for our awesome spring season,” he said as the zoom meeting was ending.

“So keep that in the back of your mind. Say your prayers. Send some good juju.

We would love to spend a good two or three weeks together before we start our season in January.

SEPTEMBER UPDATE

MATTERA: The timeline remains the same. We are hoping for our Spring season to stay intact, but we will have to see how it goes.

ATR: ARE YOU CONSIDERING RAISING MONEY FROM ALUMS IF THE FOOTBALL OR BASKETBALL TEAMS DON’T PLAY OR EARN ENOUGH?

MATTERA: I think that once they have some more information regarding football and basketball, they will spend some more time on the Spring sports and get us some updated guidance (sometime in October). Everyone is going to be taking a significant financial hit, so fundraising is always on everyone’s mind, especially now. Go Aztecs, Peter
