It was a modest surprise: When John Isner, 38, retired at the 2023 U.S. Open, he immediately celebrated his four years (2003-2006) as a University of Georgia Bulldog. He recounted his delight at playing his final college match before 6,000 fans in the 2006 NCAA team finals.
This from a guy who beat Roger and Novak and won history’s longest match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68.
Then the University of Florida’s Ben Shelton, 20, reached the 2023 Open men’s semifinals, barely a year after winning the NCAA singles title and leading his Florida Gator teammates to the NCAA team championship.
Bravo college tennis! Go Aztecs!
